As it was usurped by the Turks, Spaniards, Venetians, French, English, Russians and Austro-Hungarians and each of these empires have left significant traces of their own civilizations.
The town is dominated by the Tower Forte Mare, Spanjola, Kanli Tower... The monuments represent the inheritance of hundreds of years of Austro-Hungarian ruling. There is also a fortress on the island of Mamula and another one known as Arza which is situated on the peninsula of Lustica, at the entrance of Boka Bay. We must also mention the Savina Monastery, as well as numerous churches that originated from that time.

The oldest festival "Holiday of Mimoza", which is held during February, has been celebrated over the last 40 years. There are some exotic events throughtout the year which include Film and Music Festivals( "Sunny Stairs" for both adults and children),a Book Fair, and many other cultural and artistic events, which makes it enjoyable for all to see!
